graphite on paper The composition was inspired by Rubens's "Ascension of Mary to Heaven" in Brussels, which I had the chance to see in person. I had two intentions with the picture. One was to capture the power of his composition, creating a counterpart in abstract terms. The other to imitate the complexity of his painting, while attempting to push the boundaries of abstract complexity, within my style. The top left quarter has a gentle beauty that I find really attractive. The centre shares the beauty of the swirl but is a bit too fast for me and the top right seems awkward and jarring...like a conversation with someone you can't find common ground with.
Now there's a nice bit of waffle for you.
